How do you hang a 3-piece wall decor set? The short answer: first lay the three pieces out on the floor, align the center of the composition 145 cm from the floor (or 20-25 cm above furniture if placed over it), tape kraft paper templates cut to the size of each piece onto the wall and keep the spacing uniform at 5-8 cm, hang starting from the middle piece, and check the alignment with a spirit level for each piece. The only danger with 3-piece sets is hanging them "by eye": a 1 cm shift isn't noticeable on a single piece, but it is immediately obvious when three pieces are side-by-side. In this guide, we explain step-by-step installation using Alasart's laser-cut wood sets, which set to use at which height, how to choose sizes based on furniture, hardware for different wall types, and the most common mistakes; examples are from our wall decor sets collection.
What comes in the box, and what is needed before installation?
Alasart sets arrive as three separate panels, with hanging hardware attached to the back of each panel and wall screws included; the top and bottom of the package are reinforced with wooden supports, and the panels are wrapped in shock-absorbing packaging. Panels are laser-cut from 6 mm premium wood, painted with matte black acrylic, and prepared to stand approximately 3 cm away from the wall; this "offset" creates real shadows that shift throughout the day and also makes it important that all three pieces are at the same depth during installation. In designs where a single line continues across three panels, like the Slatted Wave Pattern 3-Piece Wood Wall Decor Set, the alignment is the design itself: if one of the panels is 5 mm too low, the wave will appear "broken".
What you need: tape measure, pencil, spirit level (a phone app works, but a real 40 cm level is more reliable), masking tape, kraft paper or newspaper, scissors; if hanging by drilling, a drill, wall plugs suitable for your wall type, and a screwdriver; if hanging without drilling, heavy-duty mounting tape. The screws in the box are for concrete and brick walls; for drywall, toggle bolts should be purchased separately. A second person helping makes the job twice as fast for large sets (100 cm and above).
Installing a 3-piece set in 7 steps
1. Arrange on the floor. Lay the three panels on the floor in front of the wall in the order and spacing you intend to hang them. For sets with varying panel heights, such as the Geometric Mountains 3-Piece Wall Decor Set, this step also determines which panel goes in the middle: the highest mountain in the center, the lower ones on the sides. Take a photo from above with your phone; any imbalance will be immediately visible on the small screen.
2. Determine the height. The center of the whole formed by the three panels should be 145-150 cm from the floor. If placed over a sofa, console, or bed, the bottom edge of the panels starts 20-25 cm above the top edge of the furniture; over a dining table, this distance increases to 35-40 cm because the person sitting is higher than the table.
3. Make paper templates. Cut kraft paper to the outer dimensions of each panel. Place the panel on the paper and mark the exact location of the hanging hardware onto the paper; this mark is the drill point. Tape the templates to the wall with masking tape and look at them for two days. Those who skip this step end up drilling the wall twice.
4. Equalize the spacing. Space between panels should be 5-8 cm; 5-6 cm for smaller sizes, 8-10 cm for sets 100 cm and above. To ensure the spacing is the same in all three places, use a block, book, or piece of cardboard of the same width instead of measuring with a tape measure; "butting" the pieces against the spacer reduces error to zero.
5. Start with the center panel. Drill from the mark on the template (or apply the mounting tape), hang the middle panel, and place the spirit level on its top edge. If the middle panel is correct, the sides are aligned accordingly; if you start from the edge, errors accumulate side-by-side.
6. Align the side panels. While hanging the left and right panels, hold the level across the top edge of all three panels (or at center alignment, which we explain below). You may feel the panel shifting sideways before the hanging hardware fully seats onto the screw; in sets that stand 3 cm out, the panel must sit parallel to the wall—if one corner is closer to the wall, the screw has not entered far enough.
7. Check the shadow. Turn on the room light and look at the shadow the panels cast on the wall: if all three shadows are in the same direction and the same width, the panels are at the same depth. In designs with ray patterns, like the Sun Rays Pattern 3-Piece Wood Wall Decor Set, the shadow is part of the design; if one panel's shadow is thinner than the others, that panel's hardware is not fully seated. Only tear down and remove the paper templates after this final check.
Top alignment, center alignment, or staggered?
There are three alignment styles for three-piece sets, and the design tells you which one is correct.
| Alignment | When to use | Example set |
|---|---|---|
| Top edge alignment | If panels are at the same height or the design continues between panels | Slatted Wave, Sun Rays, Mountains Sun and Ocean |
| Center alignment | If panels are at different heights and each is a standalone figure | Geometric Mountains, 3-Piece Leaf |
| Staggered (staircase) | Stairwell walls or when a deliberately dynamic effect is desired; each panel 8-12 cm higher than the previous | Line Pattern Mountain Silhouette, animal figure sets |
In sets with square panels like the 3-Piece Leaf Wall Decor Set, top alignment and center alignment yield the same result, making it easy; since the set weighs about 0.8 kg total (varies by size), it can even be hung with mounting tape in rental homes. The Line Pattern Mountain Silhouette 3-Piece Wood Wall Decor Set works both ways: a calm landscape with top alignment over a sofa in the living room, or a rising mountain range when hung staggered on a stairwell wall.
Which size over which furniture?
The total width of the set (three panels + two gaps) should be between half and two-thirds the width of the furniture below it. Since Alasart sets are produced in four to six sizes, there is a match for almost any furniture; the table below provides the most frequently asked pairings.
| Furniture | Target total width | Suitable set size (example) |
|---|---|---|
| 3-seater sofa (200-220 cm) | 120-145 cm | Slatted Wave 123x70, Mountains Sun and Ocean 144x70, Mountain Silhouette 129x100 |
| 2-seater sofa / 160 cm bed | 90-110 cm | Slatted Wave 90x50, Mountains Sun and Ocean 108x50, Sun Rays 108x100 |
| Console / sideboard 120-140 cm | 70-95 cm | Sun Rays 75x70, Mountain Silhouette 84x70, Geometric Mountains 76-89 cm |
| Desk 120-140 cm | 60-90 cm | Mountain Silhouette 60x50, Slatted Wave 90x50 |
| Nightstand, shelf, narrow hallway | 45-60 cm | Slatted Wave 45x25, Mountains Sun and Ocean 54x25, 3-Piece Leaf 25-35 cm panels |
The Mountains, Sun and Ocean Wave 3-Piece Wood Wall Decor Set is produced up to 210x100 cm; at this size, the three panels cover almost the entire 200 cm sofa and become a "wall" on their own. In such panoramic sets, increase the gap to 10 cm, otherwise the three pieces will read like a single plate. The complete logic of sizing is in our wall decor sizing guide, and sofa-top compositions are in our sofa-back decoration article.
Room-by-room 3-piece set placement
Living room, behind the sofa: the classic location for the set. Align with the center of the sofa, with the bottom edge 20-25 cm above the back cushions; if the sofa is not against the wall, center the set on the wall rather than the sofa. Bedroom, above the headboard: being frameless and lightweight, a wooden set is the safest decor for above a bed; for a 160 cm bed, a 90-110 cm wide set with the bottom edge 15-20 cm above the headboard. Calm designs (mountain silhouette, wave) are more suitable for sleep areas; headboard ideas are in our headboard article.
Entryway and hallway: on a narrow wall, a horizontal series of three pieces, center at 145 cm; if over a console or bench, center it on the console. In a hallway, a set that "walks" along the eye-line (wave, mountain range) does not make the hallway look long; rather, it provides rhythm; details are in our entryway decoration and hallway decoration articles. Study and office: a small-to-medium set over the desk, at a height that won't interfere with the monitor (45-50 cm above the desk surface); it becomes the only composition that reads clearly in the background of video calls. Desk rules are in our study room guide. Dining area: follow the console rule if over a sideboard, or if above a table, keep the bottom edge 35-40 cm above the table.
Installation by wall type
Concrete and brick: with the screws included in the box, 6 mm plug; the most secure situation. Drywall: standard plugs won't hold, use toggle bolts or drywall anchors; a single point per panel is sufficient. Aerated concrete (Ytong): aerated concrete plugs are essential; ordinary plugs loosen over time. Wallpaper: drilling a hole is fine, but mounting tape can lift the paper when removed; prefer drilling. Rental homes: panels weighing under 1 kg (most small and medium sets) can be hung with 4 heavy-duty mounting strips per panel; wait 1 hour after applying the tape, and pull parallel to the wall when removing. Details are in our tenant guide, and plug/nail selection is in our installation guide.
6 common mistakes when hanging a 3-piece set
1. Starting from the edge. Errors accumulate side-by-side; start with the middle panel. 2. Setting the spacing by eye. Use a block. 3. Hanging too high. Center at 145-150 cm; don't go higher just because the ceiling is high. 4. Wrong alignment. Aligning panels of different heights by the top edge makes the set look like it's "sagging"; use center alignment. 5. Installing the bracket backward. The hanging bracket is installed to keep the panel 3 cm away from the wall; do not rest the panel directly against the screw without the bracket. 6. Drilling without a template. The only way to drill three holes instead of six for three pieces is to use a template. These rules apply equally when setting up a gallery wall; details are in our gallery wall guide, and for layout inspiration, check out the 3-piece wall decor boards on Pinterest.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many cm of space is left between the pieces of a 3-piece wall decor set?
5-6 cm for small and medium-sized sets, 8-10 cm for sets 100 cm and above. It is more important that all three gaps are equal than exactly how many cm they are; measure with a block of uniform width.
At what height is a 3-piece set hung?
The center of the whole formed by the three panels should be 145-150 cm from the floor. Over sofas and consoles, the bottom edge starts 20-25 cm above the furniture, and 35-40 cm above dining tables.
Which panel do you start with?
With the middle panel. Once the middle panel is corrected with a spirit level, the right and left panels are aligned accordingly; if you start from the side, small errors grow by the third panel.
Can a 3-piece set be hung without drilling?
Small and medium-sized sets weighing under 1 kg per panel can be hung with 4 heavy-duty mounting strips per panel; large sizes and rough walls require plugged screws. The sets are shipped with hanging hardware and screws.
How do you align panels if they are of different heights?
With center alignment: the center of each panel is on the same horizontal line. Top edge alignment is used for sets at the same height or where the design continues between the panels.
How far does the set stand from the wall, and why?
Approximately 3 cm. The hanging hardware keeps the panel away from the wall; this creates a real shadow that changes depending on the light, and the design is perceived more as a relief than a flat painting. Compare the shadows to ensure all three panels are at the same depth.
