How to create a gallery wall? In five steps: choose 4-7 pieces with the same frame color, place an "anchor" piece in the middle (a three-piece wooden set or the largest poster), test the layout on the floor first, then tape templates cut from kraft paper to the wall and live with them for two days, and finally, hang them with the center of the composition at 145 cm from the floor, leaving 5-8 cm of space between the pieces. In this guide, we explain these steps and 12 ready-made layout templates for areas from above the sofa to the hallway, and from the headboard to the stairs; examples are from our wall decor sets and framed posters.
What is a gallery wall, and why does a 3-piece set + poster work well?
A gallery wall is the hanging of multiple pieces in a composition rather than a single large painting. The most common mistake is to randomly arrange 8-10 pieces that are independent of each other in size and style; the result is a "notice board" rather than a "wall." The easy solution is to provide an anchor for the composition: a three-piece wooden set like the Geometric Mountains 3-Piece Wall Decor Set creates a balanced center on its own, and the framed posters you add around it "lean" on this center. Since matte black wood and black-framed posters speak the same language, even different themes stand together in harmony. The layout in the cover image is set up with exactly this logic: the set in the middle, and a 40×50 poster on each side.
Gallery wall in 5 steps
1. Select the pieces. 4-7 pieces, a single frame color (black, white, or natural wood; do not mix), and at most two sizes. Determine a common denominator: color (black and white), theme (nature), or style (retro). Although the Black and White Minimalist Bicycle Line Art Poster and the Full Moon Meditation Japanese Zen Poster are different in theme, they provide harmony on the same wall thanks to their black frames and calm compositions.
2. Test on the floor. Arrange the pieces on the floor in front of the wall, exactly to the measurements on the wall; take a photo from above with your phone and look at it on a small screen—imbalances are immediately visible on a small screen.
3. Make paper templates. Cut kraft paper to the external framed size of each piece, mark the hanging point on the back, and tape them to the wall with paper tape. Hanging one piece immediately as in the visual above (the AURA Red Retro Typography Poster in the example) and leaving the rest as templates is the most practical way to see the scale. Live with this for two days.
4. Fix the center and spacing. The center of the entire composition should be 145-150 cm from the floor; above furniture, the bottom edge should be 20-25 cm above the furniture; between pieces 5-8 cm (8-10 cm for large pieces). See our size guide for measurement decisions.
5. Hang. First the anchor piece, then those closest to it, and finally the corners. Pierce the hanging mark on the template and tear the paper to remove it. In a rented house, you can also use mounting strips; methods are in our tenant guide, and nail-anchor details are in our installation guide.

Above the sofa (living room)
1. Anchor + two wings: 3-piece wooden set in the middle, vertical 40×50 posters on both sides; total width is two-thirds of the sofa (cover image). 2. Symmetrical duo-trio: two 50×70s side by side or three 40×50s; the simplest and safest arrangement. 3. Grid: six 30×40 posters, 2 rows × 3 columns, spacing 6 cm; modern and orderly. 4. Organic cluster: 3-piece set at the center, 4-5 posters of different sizes around it, keeping the outer edges rectangular. For compositions above the sofa, see our article on wall decoration behind the sofa.
Hallway and entryway
5. Horizontal series: single row at the same height along the hallway; a three-piece set like the Architectural Arches and Columns 3-Piece Wooden Wall Decor Set completes this template on its own, drawing the eye to the end of the hallway. 6. Vertical staircase: three 30×40s stacked on a narrow entryway wall, spacing 8 cm. 7. Duo above console: two 40×50s centered above the console + a mirror; for entryway ideas, see our entryway decoration and hallway decoration articles.
Headboard
8. Top-aligned trio: three pieces above the bed with top edges aligned; the one in the middle is larger. 9. Set + two small: horizontal 3-piece set in the middle, 21×30 posters on both sides; frameless wooden pieces are a safe choice for above the bed. Headboard measurements are in our headboard article.
Study, stairs, corner
10. Duo above desk: vertical 30×40s on both sides of the monitor; desk rules are in our study room guide. 11. Staircase diagonal: 4-5 pieces following the slope of the steps, with the center of each piece 15-20 cm above the one below it. 12. Corner turn: a composition spreading across two walls; leave a 10 cm gap on both sides at the corner. Large sets (up to 120×100 cm) like the Abstract Organic Forms 3-Piece Wooden Wall Decor Set, which fills a large space behind the sofa on its own, are a one-step alternative for those who do not want to set up a gallery wall.

| Total width | 1/2 – 2/3 of the furniture | 200 cm sofa → 100-130 cm |
| Frame color | Single color | Wooden set + black frame is the most compatible duo |
| Variety of size | At most 2 | Large piece in the center or bottom left |
| Alignment | Either top edges or centers | Do not mix the two |

5 common mistakes in a gallery wall
Hanging too high: the center should not exceed 145 cm. Too scattered spacing: less than 5 cm is stifling, more than 15 cm disperses it. Frame color confusion: use a single color. No anchor piece: if all are small pieces of the same size, the eye doesn't know where to look. Starting without measuring: do not skip the paper template step. Frequently asked questions
How many pieces are needed for a gallery wall?
4-7 pieces are ideal; a three-piece wooden set counts as three pieces, so a set + 2-4 posters is enough. Walls exceeding 10 pieces require a single frame color and a tight grid.
At what height should a gallery wall be hung?
The center of the entire composition should be at 145-150 cm from the floor. Above a sofa or console, it starts 20-25 cm above the furniture.
How much space should be left between pieces?
5-8 cm for small and medium pieces, 8-10 cm for large pieces; all spaces should be equal. In 3-piece sets, 5-6 cm between pieces looks natural.
Can different frame colors be mixed?
Not recommended for beginners; single-color frames and matte black wooden pieces are the most compatible duo. If mixed, use at most two colors with at least two pieces of each color.
Can a gallery wall be done in a rented house?
Yes; framed posters and lightweight wooden pieces can be hung with mounting strips, which can be pulled parallel to the wall upon removal without leaving marks. Heavy pieces require a single anchor hole.
On which wall should a gallery wall be created?
On the empty wall that is most visible in the room: behind the sofa, in the hallway, above the headboard, or on the stairs. Keep it small on surfaces that are already focal points, such as the TV wall.
